Practice
Massing and facade set the ceiling on performance long before any system is chosen. The envelope is where the cheap decisions are.

Decisions in the order they get made

Orientation, massing and window-to-wall ratio are settled in the first weeks. Glazing specification and shading follow. Mechanical systems come much later, by which point the envelope has already set the load they have to meet.

By the time the plant is sized, the building has already decided how much heat it lets in.

Why the order matters

  • Envelope choices are cheap to change early and expensive later
  • A deeper reveal costs a drawing revision, not a plant room
  • Performance tested on every revision keeps the options open
  • Evidence assembled as you go is evidence ready for submission

Testing while it is still cheap

The value of a continuous check is not the accuracy. It is that the answer arrives while the decision is still reversible.
